In engineering, a column is simply a structure erected to distribute his weight of the structure above to other structural elements below. This is not necessarily the case in architecture. In architectural design a "column" may become a structural element that benefits from both decorative and proportional features.
A column might not support any major structure but be a decorative or prominent feature with perhaps a statue on top. Of course the wide range of colours provided by the natural stones also gives the building more luxury and class
